Berlin City Guide

Berlin is a city that is packed with history and if you are planning a vacation there then you need to consider checking out some of the places that will bring that history up to date for you so you can experience it in full.  Many of the places in Berlin that you can see and experience the history include the Brandenburger Tor, Checkpoint Charlie Museum, Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin, and the Ddr Museum.  These are only a few of the many places that you might want to consider when you are traveling through Berlin.

The Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin is a small venue.  Don’t expect to be extremely surprised with the size of this museum because it is a join venture between the Deutsche Bank and the Guggenheim Foundation and they didn’t put a lot of money into it.  Anyone that is used to fancy museums like those in New York they may be a little disappointed.  Don’t go in with high expectations.  This museum exhibits international contemporary artists that are renowned and very popular.

The Brandenburger Tor is a landmark that most people should see when they travel to Berlin.  This is not only a symbol of the division of the Cold War but it is a piece left of the history.  This site epitomizes the reunification of Germany.  The Brandenburger Tor was the backdrop for President Ronald Reagan when he ordered to Mr. Gorbachev that the wall be torn down.  It was only two years later that the wall became history and led to a reunification for the country.  Now Germany thrives and remembers the Brandenburger Tor as a landmark for the amazing destruction of the wall.

Checkpoint Charlie Museum is a place that you must add to your itinerary if you are planning a trip to Berlin.  This museum only has one thing left to it and that is the famous tower symbolizing the East and West tension during the Cold War.  The tower was moved by a crane in 2001 and saved when the wall was torn down and the border reopened.  This was a guardhouse that guards would stand in and shoot people trying to cross over the border.

If you are interested in some of the Nazi history in the 1940s then you must stop and see Hitler’s Bunker.  This location is where Hitler’s final minutes took place and he met his maker.  Today, it is a parking lot.  However, you won’t just be sitting in a parking lot.  This site has many panels that chronicle his last days.  You can view diagrams that display the bunker network, technical data about WWII and how it was constructed.

Berlin is packed with history and there are so many places that you might consider visiting when you go.  Be sure to add some of the history to your itinerary so you can see for yourself what happened to the people during the Cold War and the Berlin Wall or when Hitler reigned and terminated the lives of millions of Jews.  Berlin has tons of museums and sites that will allow you to see these places on your own.
